Raoul Tibes is a physician-scientist with a joint appointment at TGen and the TGen Clinical Research Services at Scottsdale Healthcare. He is a board certified internist and a hematologist and oncologist by training. Dr. Tibes joined TGen to serve as interface between laboratory investigators and clinical research aspects, thus accelerating clinical application of new developments in cancer therapy and diagnostics.
In his dual function as physician and investigator, Dr. Tibes sees and enrolls patients in early phase clinical studies and is actively involved in many laboratory research in the Pharmaceutical Genomics Division (PGD) and at TGen.
One of his interests lies in hematological malignancies, especially acute leukemias. During his fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, he established a new protein analysis strategy for leukemias attempting to define specific protein profiles that might better predict responses of leukemic patients to therapy and is examining concurrent activation of signal transduction pathways in acute myeloid leukemias. His future research focuses around genomic characterization of leukemias and solid tumors to identify potential therapy targets. Dr. Tibes will continue his research on developing a molecular based distinction of leukemias, integrating DNA (Array CGH [comparative genomic hybridization]) and RNA expression analysis with functional genomics (small interference RNA technology) to identify potential new therapy targets.
With his expertise in hematological malignancies, Dr. Tibes spearheads the development of a leukemia clinical research program at the TGen Clinical Research Services at Scottsdale Healthcare as well as a translational laboratory research program in leukemias at TGen and thereby substantially contributes to enhance the clinical research environment at TGen and in Arizona.
Dr. Tibes takes an active role in designing clinical trials for new targeted agents. Together with TGen investigators, Dr. Tibes also focuses on prostate cancer with the goal of moving novel drugs into clinical studies for prostate cancer patients.
Dr. Tibes received his medical degree from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, trained in internal medicine at the New York University Medical Center in New York and did his fellowship in medical oncology/hematology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston prior to joining TGen and Scottsdale Healthcare in September 2006. He is the recipient of the prestigious Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) as well as several Merit Awards from ASCO.
